So you've decided to start an eCommerce business — amazing. But now you're staring at a dozen different website builder options and wondering which one is actually worth your time and money.

I've been through this process myself and tested a few of these platforms firsthand so let me save you the hours of research and break down the main options honestly.

 

Shopify — The Gold Standard for eCommerce

If you ask most experienced eCommerce sellers what platform they'd recommend Shopify comes up first almost every time. And for good reason.

Shopify is built specifically for selling online. Everything from inventory management to payment processing to shipping integrations is handled cleanly and professionally right out of the box.

Pros:

  • Incredibly easy to set up — you can have a store live within a day
  • Hundreds of professional themes — free and paid
  • Massive app store for adding features
  • Excellent built in analytics and reporting
  • Handles scaling beautifully — works for $1K months and $100K months

Cons:

  • Monthly fees starting at $39 per month
  • Transaction fees if you don't use Shopify Payments
  • Can get expensive as you add premium apps

Best for: Anyone serious about building a real eCommerce business who wants a reliable, scalable platform from day one.

 

WooCommerce — Best for WordPress Users

If you're already on WordPress — like Go-Marketing School — WooCommerce is a natural fit. It's a free plugin that turns your WordPress site into a fully functional online store.

Pros:

  • Free to install — you only pay for hosting and premium extensions
  • Complete control over your store's design and functionality
  • Huge library of extensions for almost any feature you need
  • No transaction fees on sales
  • Perfect if you want your store and content on the same platform

Cons:

  • Requires more technical knowledge than Shopify
  • You're responsible for your own security and updates
  • Costs can add up with premium plugins and themes

Best for: WordPress users, bloggers adding a store to their existing site, and people who want full control without monthly platform fees.

 

Wix eCommerce — Best for Beginners on a Budget

Wix has come a long way from being just a basic website builder. Their eCommerce functionality is genuinely solid now — especially for smaller stores just getting started.

Pros:

  • Very beginner friendly drag and drop interface
  • Affordable plans starting around $23 per month
  • Good selection of templates

Cons:

Cons:

Best for: Growing stores that are scaling quickly and want more built in functionality without paying for dozens of apps.

 

My Honest Recommendation

Here's how I'd approach it depending on where you are right now:

  • Just starting out with a small budget → Start with WooCommerce if you're on WordPress or Wix if you want simplicity
  • Ready to build a serious store → Go Shopify. The investment is worth it for the reliability and scalability
  • Already scaling and hitting limitations → Look seriously at BigCommerce

The platform you choose matters but it's not the most important decision you'll make. A mediocre store on Shopify with great products and marketing will always outperform a beautiful store on any platform with no traffic strategy behind it.

 

One Last Thing

Whatever platform you choose — make sure it plays nicely with Google. Clean URLs, fast loading speed, mobile optimised design, and proper meta tag control are non negotiables for eCommerce SEO in 2025. Don't pick a platform that handcuffs your ability to rank organically.

Great breakdown Lee. WooCommerce gets my vote for anyone already on WordPress and comfortable with a bit of technical setup. I ran my first store on Shopify for 18 months then migrated to WooCommerce and cut my monthly platform costs significantly. The migration was painful but worth it long term. The key is knowing your technical comfort level honestly before choosing — Shopify if you want simplicity, WooCommerce if you want control.

From a data standpoint the platform decision matters less than most people think in the early stages. I've seen stores doing six figures on Wix and stores struggling on Shopify. The platform gives you the infrastructure but your marketing, your products, and your conversion rate optimisation determine your results. Pick one that fits your budget and technical skills and focus your energy on the business not the platform.
